Mastering Pregnancy Dressing: Hiding your bump in the first trimester with stylist Liv Brown

Dressing during the first trimester of pregnancy can present a unique set of challenges, from pregnancy dressing around morning sickness to masking bloating. Finding the balance between prioritising comfort, hiding your body and also feeling good about yourself during these vulnerable weeks can be a challenge. Whether you’re planning to announce your pregnancy later or just navigating the changes privately, finding the right outfits can make a significant difference. Fashion stylist, and pregnant mamma Liv Brown of Rattle Style shares her valuable tips and tricks to make dressing during the first trimester easier work for you.

Establish Your Personal Outfit Formula:

A great starting point for pregnancy dressing is discovering your personal outfit formula. This is a template of clothing and accessory combinations that make you feel comfortable and confident. Keep your body shape and what you love to wear in mind, and once you nail it- don’t be afraid to repeat this formula over and over again. It’s what’s comfortable for your body and what you feel best in so it’s going to work. My outfit formula is a really oversized top with a dramatic sleeve, paired with a shorter bottom. This could be a cute blouse with bike shorts, or an oversized shirt with a mini skirt. Creating your own outfit formula simplifies the shopping process and ensures you always have a go-to ensemble.

Go for the Oversized Look:

Opting for oversized clothing is a fantastic strategy, especially if you enjoy this style. Think of style icons like Martha Kalifatidis, Hayley Bieber, and Emily Ratajkowski.

Oversized Shirt on Pregnant Woman

My all time favourite look is really oversized trousers and a big oversized t-shirt or jumper.
If you’re in the office, consider:
* A t-shirt with an oversized blazer and trousers, or keep its casual with loose baggy jeans.
Whatever the occasion, you can dress these oversized looks up with some heels and cute accessories.

Choose Pregnancy Dresses for Comfort:

The thought of anything tight around your stomach making you nauseous just thinking about it? Bloated, uncomfortable or wanting to avoid attention around your growing bump- dresses are a great option when you’re needing some breathing room, and perfect for hot weather. Explore your options. From t-shirt dress for maximum comfort, or a dress from COS that’s appropriate for the office.

Embrace the Power of Shirts:

Shirts are a pregnancy wardrobe essential. I honestly don’t think there is anything better than hiding your bump under a shirt. Not only are they pure comfort, but they work in almost any situation. From office dressing to running around with the kids, shirts should be your go to through every trimester.

Shirts Best For Pregnancy

* In the office you can pair it with some trousers, or even over a dress.
* For a casual vibe, throw on a shirt over bike shorts and sneakers and you’re set.

Don’t Forget the Power of Accessories:

When in doubt, accessorise. On those days you’re feeling overcome with first trimester nausea and exhaustion, pick an easy outfit you feel comfortable in and dress it up with all your favourite accessories.

Dress with accessories

In my first trimester of my current pregnancy we were having a grand-final day party at our house. I felt so bloated and so not myself and no one knew I was pregnant (I didn’t look it but I felt it) I ended up wearing one of my husband’s shirts as a dress… I made it work with shoes and accessories and ended up loving the outfit.  I love a chunky pair of earrings, lots of rings and some statement sunnies.
